Week 2:About Disney Hyperrealism

A large part of Disney’s animated films is inspired by real life, observing the most ordinary everyday and instinctive movements, and reproducing them in unique ways through exquisite paintings or movements of characters.Since its inception, the Disney Company has not only been content to achieve dynamic people and environments, but also to intercept the real world in a dynamic situation and surpass it.Disney’s animated films are made ahead of the world, and as its fame grows higher, there will naturally be many animation companies to imitate it.When Popeye met Sailor Sinbada (1936, Fleischer Studio)Willard Bowski is a rarely mentioned name in the history of animation, and is remembered by the Teacup Head production crew.Natwick was a major influencer of Fleischer style, and after he left Fleischer for Avox Studios, Bowsky and several other animators created a new Fleischer style from 1932-1936: hard pen lines, flat decorative design, hard body structure, so Popeye made —— actually closer to comics, as an animator is inappropriate.

Typical of the Fleischer mid-30s style, this shot is painted as Bowsky

Bowsky’s masterpiece was “When Popeye met Popada” in 1936, one of the two main directors of “Popeye”.We can see that there are a lot of styling that captures the Fleischer style of this stage, and there are some BOSS that move almost directly from the film!
Captain BOSS clearly borrowed Pluto’s look in the film.

The strange bird BOSS is exactly the same as the big bird appearing in the film.

Bowsky was a representative figure of Fleischer in the mid-1930s, and “When Popeye Meets the Mariner Simbada” was also one of Fleischer’s representative works.By this time, the Popeye series had already surpassed Mickey Mouse as the number one cartoon star in the United States. The teacup head production team, which is keen on Fleischer’s work, was naturally impossible to spare Bowski and his “When Popeye met sailor Sinbada.”

Unlike Disney, it has a profound impact on animation history: UPA Studio

The main work is this.UPA is actually mentioned in the Animator Survival Manual, written by Chinese animation students.UPA is more complex than Disney images is limited by The Times, and it will not exist in the future. The timeline goes back a little more about the Flash and UPA connection.

Personally, I think that the influence of UPA on the current animation is not similar to Disney, so I will have a little superficial understanding of the UPA design and action mode, and I am personally more interested in the practical value of UPA to the animation industry than the artistic connotation.

People think the UPA is more complex than Disney imagery, and their animation is more “restrained” than as realistic as Disney.
UPA is more complex than Disney images has certain era limitations (technology and cost restrictions, rich pictures and rich action can only be taken as one), there is not this problem in the future. But there are still two more points:

“Temperance” in action
Non-realism in action and design
